Spaceport Threatens Historic Route (Source: Las Cruces Sun-News)
Jean Fulton scans the vista, searching for a break in vegetation that will reveal the object of her visit — a 400-year-old, 1,500-mile-long vestige of Spanish colonial days. Soon, she spots it. A few dozen yards later, her feet light upon El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro — a route that linked Spanish settlers from Mexico City to just north of Santa Fe in 1598. Though other sections have fallen victim to development, the construction of modern roads or the passage of time, the path's cut across this particularly barren stretch of land — known as the Jornada del Muerto, or, Deadman's Journey — has remained visible. But Fulton and a group of El Camino Real enthusiasts are worried a proposal for a spaceport nearby will threaten this portion of the historic route. Fulton and other members of the Las Cruces-based El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro Trail Association — or, CARTA — are asking that project be relocated, farther from the trail.
