A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket sent NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space
Telescope on its way Aug 30 to unlock secrets of the universe. The
Sunday morning liftoff came after earlier weather concerns placed the
launch at only a 50 percent chance of favorable liftoff conditions.
However, by the time SpaceX began fueling the rocket and the sun rose
over the Cape, the skies had cleared for an on-time morning liftoff.

NASA Announces Next Steps for Swift

NASA and Katalyst Space will attempt rendezvous and proximity
operations between Katalyst’s LINK spacecraft and NASA’s Neil Gehrels
Swift Observatory, following an ongoing commercial spacecraft
attitude-control issue. The maneuver is intended to demonstrate
capabilities that could support future on-orbit servicing and space
exploration missions.
Without an orbital adjustment, NASA anticipates Swift is likely to
re-enter Earth’s atmosphere later this year. As part of the agency's
previous plans for Swift's retirement, NASA will rely on current
missions to fill the gap left by the satellite's loss while exploring
new options for rapidly responding to transient cosmic events like
GRBs. As Shawn Domagal-Goldman, the director of the Astrophysics
Division at NASA Headquarters, explained, it was always known that this
was a high-risk, high-reward mission with an unprecedented timeline.

Blue Origin Patents Extendable Rocket

Rocket engines are designed for both atmospheric and vacuum operations.
The length of the nozzle is a main factor. Vacuum operations require an
extended nozzle to compensate for the lack of atmospheric pressure.
Blue Origin's plans for a reusable upper stage will operate in both
environments. So the company has patented an approach to convert an
upper-stage engine nozzle from vacuum-length to atmospheric length
while in-flight.
After stage separation and ignition, the upper stage delivers its
payload and prepares for reentry and reuse. But to use its engines for
propulsive reentry, the vacuum nozzle must be shortened for atmospheric
operation (and probably also for vertical landing). The new patent
describes a vacuum-nozzle extender that is clamped onto a shorter
nozzle at launch, then is jettisoned in space before reentry. Click here.

Orbex’s Sutherland Spaceport Assets

Scotland’s Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has acquired the
assets of Sutherland Spaceport Ltd, an Orbex subsidiary that was
established to develop a vertical launch site on the north coast of
Scotland. In a 25 August announcement, HIE said it had acquired the
assets from the company’s joint liquidators and would now review how
the partially developed site could be used. Scotland’s cabinet
secretary for economy, tourism and transport, Stephen Flynn, signalled
support for the continued development of the planned launch facility.

Brownsville Commissioners Approve

City commissioners voted unanimously late Saturday night to voluntarily
disannex more than 444 acres of land at the request of SpaceX after a
tense, six-hour special meeting. At stake was a $220 million agreement
with the trillion-dollar aerospace company that city leaders say will
secure Brownsville’s ability to supply water to its residents for
generations.
The evening highlighted the lopsided power dynamics between the city
and SpaceX, with a representative from SpaceX straightforwardly telling
commissioners that the company would only provide money to the water
infrastructure projects if commissioners passed an ordinance
formalizing the disannexation the same night.
Following the meeting, Mayor John Cowen Jr. told the Herald that the
decision weighed heavily on commissioners. He said the mood during the
two executive sessions of the night was intense, with many in the room
sharing concern that the process played out during special meetings.

Louisiana Residents Voice Opposition

Local community members have raised concerns regarding safety and the
potential disruption to natural habitats. James Evans, an Acadia Parish
resident, voiced opposition to placing a launch infrastructure near
local wildlife areas. “That’s my concern. The safety and environment.
It’s going to affect wildlife and that that should not happen at all,
not for no rocket ship. That’s just my opinion,” Evans said.
Evans also discussed the emotional impact on residents who worry about
animal displacement from untouched wetlands. “It’s just the wildlife
and the people, it’s okay to displace all these animals? This is not
justice, this is just it’s just wrong. It makes me it makes me sad to
be a Louisiana resident, right now.. ashamed,” Evans said. SpaceX is

FAA Pushes Spaceports with P3s as

The FAA is seeking information about where and how the U.S. should
build spaceports and space infrastructure. The policy push paves the
way for the first tax-exempt private activity bonds for spaceports and
opens doors for public-private partnerships. Last year's One Big
Beautiful Bill Act created tax-exempt private activity bonds for
spaceports for the first time. A planned Space Florida conduit
financing for an obligor code-named "Project Jaguar" may be the first
deal in the works.
The government is looking for feedback on what makes a viable new
spaceport, why some are underused and for input on previously discussed
locations, including in Puerto Rico and "offshore launch platforms."

SpaceX's plan to build a $100 billion spaceport in Louisiana is drawing
scrutiny from investors over how the company intends to finance the
project. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas estimates that the Louisiana
facility accounts for roughly 2% of what SpaceX is likely to spend
across all its initiatives through 2035, a figure that reflects
expected capital expenditures for artificial-intelligence projects.
Financing those ambitions will require the company to take on
significant debt, the analyst said.
At full buildout, it is expected to include five launch complexes, each
with two launch pads and a propellant farm, along with a propellant
production facility, power generation infrastructure, vehicle
processing facilities, and residential housing for employees and their
families, the company said.
The funding questions come at a complicated moment for SpaceX's balance
sheet. The company's second-quarter earnings release showed capital
expenditures of $18.4 billion, well above the $10.1 billion recorded in
the prior quarter. SpaceX stock fell as much as 8% in after-hours
trading following that report on concerns over the elevated spending.
SpaceX raised $85.7 billion in its June IPO — the largest in history —
at $135 per share, the company said. The company ended the second
quarter with $100 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and marketable
securities, and $47.5 billion in backlog. (8/28)
